A bomb exploded at a busy bus stop in Bangkok yesterday, killing one and injuring ten.
The device that exploded outside the Big C supermarket, on the capital’s Ratchadamri Road, was reportedly concealed in a pile of litter, and set off from a remote location.
A team of investigators led by Major-General Anuchai Lekbumrung, a Thai police officer, questioned witnesses at the scene. Several of them said they heard electrical appliance noises just before the explosion.

A Swedish citizen accused of operating a Ya Ice drug factory was arrested last Wednesday.
On Friday, 29-year-old Kim Roger Eriksson was remanded in custody for 12 days by Bangkok judges. The period of detention, without charge, can be extended to 84 days in Thailand. He is due in court again on July 27.
After Mr Eriksson’s arrest, a search of his lab in Rayong supposedly turned up bottles containing one litre of Ya Ice, also known as methamphetamine, and drug making paraphernalia.

A Thai national was held by police after being caught with a large quantity of rare turtles in Bangkok last Wednesday.
Officers of Thailand’s Environmental Crime Division held Mr Wallop Naruemitprackakorn, 39, after he was found in possession of 500kgs of turtles and snakes.
Officials, acting on information received, questioned Mr Wallop near the Kasetsart University campus in Bangkok. He had around 110 turtles, including rare breeds such as Siamese box terrapins and temple terrapins, and a mix of 20 pythons and cobras.

The ubiquitous Bangkok tuk-tuk is in for a revamp with the development of an environmentally friendly and silent model.
For decades, tuk-tuks, which are a form of taxi in Thailand, have been a fixture on the streets of Bangkok. The tuk-tuk moves with a sound akin to a chain-saw. Tuk-tuks are powered by petrol or gas, with little engine maintenance, and usually belch out thick clouds of exhaust fumes.
Due to the fact that the colourful vehicles can only carry two passengers comfortably, they are slowly being superseded by alternate transport options, which include taxis and public services, such as the Skytrain. Tuk-tuks are more of a tourist attraction than a viable means of transport nowadays.

A homemade bomb went off outside the Bhum Jai Thai Party’s headquarters in Bangkok on Tuesday. The blast injured the bomber, Mr Anek Singkhuntod, 26.
The bomber claims that he was paid to put his fruit cart, which contained a 15kg gas cylinder packed with explosives, outside the Bhum Jai Thai building.
Bhum Jai Thai is one of the core parties in the government’s coalition group. The explosion is unlikely to encourage the Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) to lift the State of Emergency decree, still in effect in Bangkok. Continue reading →

The annual Thailand Tourism Festival, held at Impact Muang Thong Thani Exhibition Centre, attracted a larger crowd than usual.
The five-day event, which finished on June 13, was attended by an estimated 200,000 visitors. Many of the holiday seekers and bargain hunters were Thai.
Festival organisers and participating firms offered deals aimed at locals, which included discounted accommodation, flights and holidays as well as diving and beauty packages.

Bangkok’s biggest shopping centre, which was destroyed by arsonists during the city’s recent political problems, is set to open its doors again.
On May 19 2010 the world watched as the second biggest shopping centre in Southeast Asia was set alight by rioters after the military exercise to clear Bangkok’s streets of anti-government Red-Shirt demonstrators.
Last Monday, Kobchai Chirathiwat the managing director of Central Pattana, CentralWorld’s owners, told Thailand Business News he thought that the shopping centre could open again in six months.

EXPATS may have been responsible for the daring 12 million baht Bangkok heist carried out on Friday, according to police.
A Toyota sedan owned by a Phuket resident is believed to have been the getaway vehicle used by the robbers.
The heist occurred outside Krung Thai Bank headquarters in the Thai capital, with the car said to have been rented from a Phuket car hire company. Continue reading →
