Bangkok gets direct bus services to Cambodia

17 Dec 2012

The Thai national transport operator has announced that direct bus services from Bangkok to Cambodia will begin at the end of December. Chairperson Wuttichart Kalayanamitr said there will be three round-trip services a day from 29 December.

One of the new routes links Bangkok to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, and will operate once a day in each direction. Departure times are 07:00 for both buses. The outbound bus from Bangkok will leave from the Northern Bus Terminal (Morchit). Scheduled journey times are 11 hours and one-way fares are 900 Baht.

The other two daily buses will also leave from Morchit and travel to Siem Reap, the gateway to the fabled temple city of Angkor Wat. Departure times from Morchit are 06:00 and 16:00. Return buses from Siem Reap leave at 06:00 and 15:00. The one-way fare for the seven-hour trip is 750 Baht.

Fares from Cambodia to Bangkok are priced in US dollars. Siem Reap to Bangkok is US$25 and from Phnom Penh to Bangkok is US$30. Air-conditioned 40-seater buses will be utilised for services on both routes. The services will cross the border at the Aranyaprathet-Poipet border control post.

Although there are tourist buses between Bangkok and Aranyaprathet as well as from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh to Poipet, the new national bus routes are the first offering direct public service between the two neighbouring nations.
