Cambodian carrier starts Bangkok flights

7 Jan 2013

The recently established Cambodian national airline has announced it will start a new route to Bangkok on 1 February. A statement released by Cambodia Angkor Air said the new route linking Phnom Penh and Bangkok will operate once daily in each direction.

The outward leg will depart from the Cambodian capital at 12:15. The return flight from Bangkok will leave at 14:20. The carrier says it will utilise 184-seat Airbus A321s for the 65 minute flights.

Cambodia Angkor Air was founded in 2009 as a joint venture by the national government and Vietnam Airlines. The previous Cambodian national airline, Royal Air Cambodge, had gone bust eight years before.

The new airline was set up primarily to offer tourists convenient access to the town of Siem Reap, the gateway to the legendary temple city of Angkor Wat. On 30 November 2012, the carrier started flying between Siem Reap and Bangkok.

With its new Phnom Penh-Bangkok service, Cambodia Angkor Air will be competing for passengers with budget airline Thai AirAsia as well as Bangkok Airways and Thai Airways. These airlines all operate flights at least twice daily in each direction.

To mark the launch of the new route, Cambodia Angkor Air is offering passengers the opportunity of flying at a cut-rate fare of 4,470 Baht through until the end of February. The fare includes all taxes and surcharges. This compares well with Thai AirAsia’s lowest prices and favourably with Thai Airways. Round-trip fares on the latter top 11,000 baht.
